Mayo: New Polling on Company Tax Cuts, Voter Priorities for Government Revenue, Newstart

The Australia Institute commissioned ReachTEL to poll the federal seats of Mayo (766 respondents) on the evening of Wednesday 25 July.

Key Findings:

  • 59/41 two-party preferred, favouring Centre Alliance candidate Rebekha Sharkie
  • Only 27.7% support for cutting company tax rate for large business, while 65.8% want tax rate increased or kept same
  • 63.5% oppose or strongly oppose banks receiving company tax cut (29.5% support or strongly support)
  • Only 4.7% prefer the government priorities tax cuts for companies compared to spending on infrastructure and government services (49.1%), decreasing the deficit (27.1%) or personal income tax cuts (14.1%)
  • 19.2% agree with the Government’s proposed cut to Newstart, while 77.1% think the rate should be increased or kept the same.

“There is no compelling economic case for large company tax cuts,” said Ben Oquist, executive director of The Australia Institute.

“Repeated analysis shows there is no link between a country's company tax rate and employment, economic growth or prosperity.

“These poll results again show that the community understands that company tax cuts are not in Australia’s long term interests.

“Australia needs a secure long term revenue base if a decent society is to be maintained and the public gets the services and infrastructure they deserve."
