Share

Polling of the electorate of Solomon released today by the Australia Institute shows a majority support keeping the NT fracking moratorium in place.

Results:

  • 53% total support for keeping in place the fracking moratorium, to 38% opposed.
  • 58% do not trust the NT and the gas companies to implement and enforce all recommendations from the fracking inquiry.
  • When asked to consider water quality recommendations from the inquiry, support for maintaining the moratorium increased to 67%
  • 68% thought the NT government should focus on building renewable energy in preference to fracking for gas.

Question: Currently in the Northern Territory there is a pause, or moratorium, in place on hydraulic fracturing for unconventional gas, also known as ‘fracking’. Do you support or oppose keeping in place the fracking moratorium in the Northern Territory?

“Despite a ferocious campaign from the gas industry and federal government to convince Territorians to end the moratorium on fracking, the majority still support it,” said Principal Advisor at The Australia Institute, Mark Ogge.

“When asked if they trusted the NT and gas companies to implement and enforce all 120 recommendations of the Northern Territory fracking enquiry 58% of respondents answered ‘no’.

“The poll indicated strong concern over water quality and community consent over fracking, as respondents support for the moratorium increased sharply in light of these issues,” Ogge said.
